Lampeter – Wales’ oldest university
return to Landscapes of Faith festival journeys
Lampeter is Wales’s oldest university. It was established in 1822 because Welsh scholars could not afford to study at Oxford and Cambridge, so this national initiative was set up to study theology and the humanities in the heart of Wales in this beautifully appointed market town.
We’ll be wandering through the college precincts and visiting the town’s churches.
Of course, we can’t help remembering, because our landscapes of Faith festival is based there (and this is where our journey is headed), that Britain’s first recorded centre of learning dates back 1500 years to the college in Wales founded by St Illtud at Llantwit Major on the Glamorgan Coast: The New Library
